For the Cake:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 ½ cups granulated sugar

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

4 large eggs

1 cup buttermilk

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon almond extract (optional)

For the Strawberry Filling:

2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced

½ cup granulated sugar

2 tablespoons lemon juice

For the Vanilla Buttercream Frosting:

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

4 cups powdered sugar

2 tablespoons heavy cream

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Pink food coloring (optional)

For Garnish:

Fresh strawberries

Edible flowers (like pansies or violets)

Heart-shaped sprinkles or confetti

Instructions
 

Prepare the Cake Batter:

    - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

      - In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

        - Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then mix in buttermilk, vanilla, and almond extract.

          - In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

            - Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.

              Bake the Cake:

                - Divide the cake batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.

                  - Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

                    - Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.

                      Prepare the Strawberry Filling:

                        - In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the sliced strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice.

                          - Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the strawberries are soft and syrupy. Remove from heat and let cool.

                            Make the Vanilla Buttercream Frosting:

                              - In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.

                                - Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating until well combined. Mix in heavy cream and vanilla extract.

                                  - If desired, add pink food coloring to achieve your desired shade.

                                    Assemble the Cake:

                                      - Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of the strawberry filling over the top.

                                        - Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the vanilla buttercream.
