Ingredients

For the Pretzels:

2 cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)

1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

4 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon sea salt

⅓ cup baking soda

Coarse sea salt for sprinkling

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

For the Cheese Dip:

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

1 cup milk (preferably whole)

1 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon onion powder

Salt and pepper to taste

Optional: chopped green onions or jalapeños for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Dough:

In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy. Add the flour and sea salt to the bowl and mix until a dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth.

      Let the Dough Rise:

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

          Shape the Pretzels:

Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 24 inches long, and then twist it into a pretzel shape. Place the shaped pretzels on the lined baking sheets.

              Boil the Pretzels:

In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil. Add the baking soda to the boiling water. Carefully drop each pretzel into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place back on the baking sheets. Brush the tops with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.

                  Bake the Pretzels:

Bake the pretzels in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown. Let them cool slightly before serving.

                      Make the Cheese Dip:

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute. Slowly add the milk, whisking constantly until thickened. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, and season with salt and pepper until smooth and creamy.

                          Serve:

Serve the warm soft pretzels alongside the cheesy dip. Garnish with chopped green onions or jalapeños if desired. Enjoy your delicious homemade soft pretzels with cheese dip!
