Ingredients

1 loaf (about 16 ounces) of brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

8 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

3/4 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup maple syrup (plus extra for serving)

1 cup fresh blueberries (optional)

1 cup sliced strawberries (optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

Prepare the Casserole: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Combine Ingredients: In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spread half of the bread cubes evenly across the bottom. Pour half of the egg mixture over the bread, followed by the blueberries and strawberries, if using. Top with the remaining bread cubes and pour the rest of the egg mixture over the top, ensuring that all bread pieces are thoroughly soaked.

Sweeten the Experience: Drizzle the maple syrup over the top of the casserole. Gently press down on the bread cubes to ensure they absorb the custard.

Chill Overnight: Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight, allowing the bread to soak up all the delicious custard.

Preheat and Bake: The next morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes while the oven preheats.

Bake to Perfection: Uncover the casserole and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set. If the top begins to brown too quickly, cover it loosely with aluminum foil.

Serve with Style: Once baked, allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with additional maple syrup on the side.
