Ingredients

8 slices of thick-cut bread (such as brioche or challah)

4 slices of ham

4 slices of turkey or chicken breast

4 slices of Gruyère or Swiss cheese

4 large eggs

1 cup of milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons of butter (for cooking)

Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Raspberry or strawberry jam (for serving)

Instructions

Prepare the Egg Mixture: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, salt, and pepper until well combined. Set aside.

Assemble the Sandwiches: Lay out 4 slices of bread on a clean surface. Layer each with one slice of ham, one slice of turkey or chicken, and one slice of cheese. Top with the remaining 4 slices of bread to form sandwiches.

Soak the Sandwiches: Dip each assembled sandwich into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are well-coated. Allow excess liquid to drip off.

Cook the Sandwiches: In a large skillet or griddle over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Place two sandwiches in the skillet (or as many as fit without overcrowding) and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and the cheese melts. Add more butter as needed for the second batch.

Serve the Monte Cristo: Once cooked, remove from the skillet and let them cool slightly. Dust the tops with powdered sugar. Cut each sandwich in half or quarters.

Add Accompaniments: Serve the sandwiches warm with raspberry or strawberry jam on the side for dipping.
