Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 large egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

Oil for frying

For the glaze:

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

2-3 tbsp milk

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

In another bowl, mix the melted butter, buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract.

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. Do not overmix; the batter should be a bit lumpy.

Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Once chilled, turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness.

Using a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters (one larger for the outer circle and a smaller one for the hole), cut out donuts and holes.

Heat oil in a deep frying pan or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C). Carefully add the donuts a few at a time, frying for about 1-2 minutes on each side until they turn golden brown.

Remove the donuts from the oil and drain on paper towels. Let them cool slightly.

For the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth. Adjust the thickness by adding more milk or powdered sugar as needed.

Dip the warm donuts into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off, and set on a wire rack to let the glaze set.
