Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup warm water (110°F)

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1 large egg

Oil for frying (canola or vegetable)

1/2 cup pure maple syrup

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup brown sugar, for sprinkling

Optional: toppings like powdered sugar, cinnamon, or crushed nuts

Instructions

In a small bowl, mix warm water and sugar until dissolved. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the melted butter, egg, and the yeast mixture.

Mix until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a flat oval shape about 1/4 inch thick.

Heat oil in a deep pan or fryer over medium heat (about 350°F). Fry each dough oval for about 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown.

Remove from oil and drain on paper towels. While still warm, drizzle with maple syrup and sprinkle with brown sugar and any additional toppings you desire.

Serve warm for a delightful treat reminiscent of the famous Canadian dessert!
