Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 ½ cups milk (room temperature)

4 large eggs (separated)

1 cup granulated sugar

½ cup unsalted butter (melted and cooled)

1 tsp vanilla extract

½ tsp baking powder

Pinch of salt

Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking pan and line the bottom with parchment paper for easy removal.

In a mixing bowl, whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt until stiff peaks form. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks and sugar together until pale and fluffy, about 4-5 minutes.

Gradually add the melted butter and vanilla extract to the egg yolk mixture, mixing until smooth.

Slowly incorporate the flour and baking powder into the egg yolk mixture, followed by the milk. Mix until fully combined and smooth.

Gently fold in the whipped egg whites into the batter in three parts, taking care not to deflate the mixture. The batter will be slightly lumpy and airy.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading evenly.

Bake in the preheated oven for about 40-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Once baked, remove from the oven and allow to cool completely in the pan.

Dust the top lightly with powdered sugar before cutting into squares and serving.
