Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)

2 teaspoons instant yeast

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons olive oil (plus more for brushing)

1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (optional)

Freshly grated Parmesan cheese (for topping)

Coarse sea salt (for topping)

Fresh herbs (e.g., basil or parsley) for garnish

Instructions

Activate the Yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5–10 minutes until frothy.

Mix the Dough: Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. If you’re using garlic powder or Italian herbs, add them now. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.

First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Shape the Breadsticks: Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope (about 12 inches long). To create a heart shape, form a ‘V’ at the top (for the lobes) and then curve the ends down to meet at the bottom, pinching to secure the shape.

Second Rise: Place the shaped breadsticks on a lightly greased baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover them again and let rise for another 30 minutes.

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Prepare for Baking: Once the breadsticks have risen, brush them lightly with olive oil. Sprinkle with freshly grated Parmesan and coarse sea salt.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, and serve warm. Garnish with chopped fresh herbs on top for an extra festive touch. Enjoy your heartfelt creation!
