Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) instant yeast

1 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup warm water (about 110°F)

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (optional)

1 egg (for egg wash)

Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)

Fresh parsley or basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt. Whisk together until well mixed.

Add Liquids: Gradually pour in the warm water and olive oil while stirring with a wooden spoon until a dough begins to form.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until it's smooth and elastic.

Let it Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm area for about 30-45 minutes or until it has doubled in size.

Shape the Breadsticks: Once risen, punch down the dough to release any air bubbles. Roll the dough out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife, cut strips about 1 inch wide.

Form Hearts: Take each strip, twist it slightly, then form it into a heart shape by pinching the bottom together. Place the shaped breadsticks on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Second Rise: Cover the breadsticks with a towel and let them rise for another 15-20 minutes.

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Egg Wash: Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush it over each breadstick. Sprinkle them with coarse sea salt, and if desired, sprinkle garlic powder and dried herbs for extra flavor.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until they are golden brown.

Garnish & Serve: Once baked, let them cool slightly. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley or basil for a pop of color. Serve warm.
