Hawaiian rolls have a charming backstory rooted in the islands' rich culinary traditions. Originally created by Robert Taira in the 1950s, these rolls were inspired by the flavors of the Pacific Islands. Taira, a Japanese immigrant, developed the recipe using high-quality ingredients, including sugar and pineapple, which gave the rolls their signature sweetness and soft, fluffy texture.

Ingredients

8 Hawaiian sweet rolls

4 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

1/4 cup heavy cream

1/4 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup unsalted butter

Fresh pineapple slices (for serving)

Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Maple syrup (for drizzling)

Instructions

Prep the Rolls: Slice each Hawaiian roll in half horizontally, making sure not to cut them all the way through, so they open like a book. This will create a pocket for the egg mixture.

Make the Custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Soak the Rolls: Place the sliced rolls in a shallow baking dish. Pour the egg mixture over the rolls, ensuring they are coated thoroughly. Allow them to soak for at least 15-20 minutes for the best flavor and texture.

Preheat the Pan: Heat a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add a tablespoon of butter and melt it, swirling it to coat the surface.

Cook the French Toast: Once the butter is melted and sizzling, carefully place the soaked rolls in the skillet, cut-side down. Cook for about 2-3 minutes until golden brown. Flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes on the other side. Repeat with remaining rolls, adding more butter as needed.

Serve: Remove the French toast from the pan and place on a serving platter. Serve warm topped with fresh pineapple slices, a dusting of powdered sugar, and a drizzle of maple syrup.

Enjoy: Gather your loved ones and enjoy this delicious Tropical Hawaiian Roll French Toast as a perfect breakfast or brunch treat!
