Ingredients

1 large loaf of challah or brioche bread

4 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Pinch of salt

1/2 cup maple syrup (for drizzling)

Fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) for topping

Powdered sugar for dusting

Optional: whipped cream or Greek yogurt for serving

Instructions

Preheat your oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the bread: Take your loaf of challah or brioche bread and make Hasselback cuts. With a sharp knife, make deep slices (about 3/4 of the way through), spacing them about 1 inch apart. Be careful not to cut all the way through the bottom.

Make the custard mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt until well combined.

Soak the bread: Place the loaf in a large baking dish. Pour the custard mixture over the bread, ensuring that it seeps into the cuts. If necessary, gently push the slices apart to allow the custard to fully absorb.

Let it rest: Let the bread sit for about 20-30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the bread to soak up the custard. If possible, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for about an hour or overnight for a more intense flavor.

Bake the French toast: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. After 25 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Drizzle with maple syrup, dust with powdered sugar, and top with fresh berries. Optionally, serve with whipped cream or Greek yogurt on the side.

Enjoy: Slice into sections for serving, making sure to scoop up some of the delicious custard mixture that settled at the bottom. Enjoy your delightful Hasselback Baked French Toast warm!
