Before diving into the recipe, it's essential to understand what puff pastry is and why it's a crucial component of this delightful treat. Puff pastry is a light, flaky pastry made from layers of dough and butter. When baked, the water in the butter creates steam, causing the layers to puff and separate, resulting in a wonderfully airy texture. This unique characteristic makes puff pastry incredibly versatile, suitable for both sweet and savory dishes.

Ingredients

1 sheet of puff pastry (thawed)

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)

1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

Pinch of salt

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

On a clean, flat surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet gently with a rolling pin to smooth it out. Cut the pastry into 1-inch wide strips, about 10-12 strips in total.

In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Set aside.

Brush the melted butter generously over each pastry strip.

Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the buttered strips, ensuring good coverage.

Take each strip and twist it gently several times to create a spiral shape. Pinch the ends to secure the twist.

Place the twisted pastries on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Brush the tops of the twists with the beaten egg to give them a beautiful golden-brown finish.

Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until they are puffed and golden.

Once baked, remove the twists from the oven and allow them to cool slightly before serving.
