Ingredients

4 large baking apples (such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)

1 cup walnuts, finely chopped

1 cup pistachios, finely chopped

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

½ cup granulated sugar

½ cup unsalted butter, melted

1 cup phyllo dough, thawed (about 6 sheets)

1 cup honey

½ cup water

1 tablespoon lemon juice

Optional: powdered sugar for serving

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Apples: Core the apples and create a large hollow in the center. Be careful not to pierce through the bottom. Set aside.

Make the Nut Filling: In a bowl, combine the chopped walnuts, pistachios, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and granulated sugar. Mix well.

Prepare Phyllo Dough: On a clean surface, lay out the sheets of phyllo dough and brush each sheet with melted butter. Layer them, creating a stack that will form a crust around the apples. Aim for three layers for a good structure.

Fill the Apples: After stacking the phyllo, cut the layers into strips approximately 1 inch wide. Wrap the nut mixture tightly around the top of the apples, pressing down gently to pack it in.

Wrap the Apples: Using the phyllo strips, wrap each apple, allowing some of the nut mixture to show at the top. Secure with a toothpick if necessary. Place the wrapped apples in a baking dish.

Prepare the Honey Syrup: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine honey, water, and lemon juice. Stir until heated through and slightly thickened. Remove from heat.

Bake the Apples: Pour half of the honey syrup over the apples in the baking dish. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the apples are tender and the phyllo is golden brown.

Serve: Drizzle the remaining honey syrup over the baked apples before serving. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar for an added touch. Serve warm and enjoy your delightful Baklava Baked Apples!
