Ingredients

6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1 tablespoon lemon juice

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

16 sheets phyllo dough, thawed

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1/4 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped (optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Filling: In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and flour. Set aside to let the flavors meld while you prepare the phyllo dough.

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Layer the Phyllo Dough: On a clean surface, lay down one sheet of phyllo dough and brush it with melted butter. Place another sheet on top, repeating the brushing process. Continue layering until you have 8 sheets layered.

Assemble the Pie: Gently place the layered phyllo dough into a greased 9-inch pie pan, allowing the edges to hang over the sides. Fill the center with the apple mixture, spreading it evenly. If using, sprinkle the chopped walnuts or pecans over the apples.

Top with More Phyllo: Lay 8 more sheets of phyllo dough on top of the apple filling, brushing each layer with melted butter, just like before. Once all layers are added, fold the edges of the bottom phyllo over the top to seal the filling.

Bake: Using a sharp knife, cut a few slits in the top layer to allow steam to escape. Bake in the preheated oven for about 35-40 minutes or until the phyllo is golden brown and crispy.

Cool and Serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar if desired. Slice and serve warm or at room temperature.
